Abstract
As part of a major research project into the use of microcomputers in high-school classrooms, our research team elected to use a multifaceted, qualitative approach to data gathering and analysis. In order to facilitate this approach, we decided to build a large-scale computerized textual database. Several factors had to be taken into consideration in the establishment of this database. Software requirements included an ability to handle textual data well and to manage a large number of records. Compatibility of the database package with other software in use by research team members was also important. Crucial design decisions included the use of a general-purpose rather than a specialized database system, establishment of a hierarchical data organization, and a method for coding keywords. In the end, the database system proved effective in helping to implement our chosen methodology and in increasing the productivity of researchers.
