From Mainframes to Micros: Computer Applications for Anthropologists

Abstract

During the past 30 years, anthropologists have shifted their computer applications from large mainframe computers with relatively limited memory and mass storage capabilities to highly portable microcomputers with large memory and mass storage characteristics. Thus, computers are now critical components for field-work as well as for subsequent data analysis and write-up. Additionally, computers are becoming integral parts of classroom and laboratory instruction for undergraduate and graduate students in a wide array of anthropology courses.
