Abstract
Probation officers ‘sifted’ to community rehabilitation companies (CRCs) are left wondering precisely what their role and longer term future will be; this article argues that they are essential carriers of the probation heritage in which they can be 'cultural architects ‘to the CRC organizations. Being at one remove from the MOJ, the CRCs have the potential to reinvigorate 'what works'.
