Abstract

The criminal justice system is currently receiving unprecedented media attention. Whilst the Criminal Justice Act 1991 and the Woolf Report offered at least the possibility of a more humane system, Steve Collett of Merseyside Probation Service argues that the extensive coverage and analysis of the recent James Bulger murder and convictions has seriously set back the prospects for developing more effective and humane measures for the broad range of offenders.
