Abstract
After examining some of the traditional explanations for the continuation of the nuclear arms race between the United States and USSR, the author discusses the psychological components that are believed to play a crucial role in maintaining the momentum of the nuclear arms race. Certain parallels are explored between the vicious circularity of the nuclear arms race and the cycle of neurosis. Psychic numbing, distorted perceptions of the enemy, psychological defensiveness, and illogical thinking are considered in relation to the relevance of each in understanding the current nuclear arns policies of the Reagan administration. It is suggested that new, more creative approaches are required to resolve the nuclear dilemma. There is a need for further awareness, the creative use of imagination, and global perspectives that recognize our common humanity.
