Abstract
This article is a theoretical piece that reflects on the process many Xicanas/Xicanos undergo to break their silence and claim authentic voice. Based on the work of Paulo Freire, the theory of conscientization, which embodies the tenets of reflection, dialogue, and transformation, is used as an alternative framework to conceptualize this experience. When Xicanas/Xicanos name, reflect, and dialogue about their realities, this process becomes one way to counteract oppressive practices and create transformation.
