Abstract
Will core skills improve engineering programmes? A small-scale college-based research project examining the problems encountered by engineering students. Perceptions of the students and their lecturers are contrasted. The introduction of assessment of core transferable skills required by new courses would reduce these problems. However, engineering lecturers taking responsibility for skills teaching will be required to change their teaching style.
