Abstract
In the light of recent information based on research, it is now possible to re-appraise the various functions of windows and to take a more comprehensive look at their effects on window design. The paper discusses the information at present available in terms of the basic window functions of lighting, visual quality, visual contact with the outside, insolation and insulation, and assesses the relative effects of the physical and psychological requirements of each of these on the others. Such requirements are also considered as being a function of the internal and external planning of the building. It is necessary to ensure that the results obtained from research are used by piecing this information together in a manner that is coherent and easily understood by designers.
