Abstract
An unusual homogeneous, eosinophilic material has been observed in the superficial epithelium of chronic hyperplastic oral mucosa. A study of 40 specimens of epulis fissuratum and 69 specimens of irritation fibroma revealed the material's association with chronic inflammation of the hyperplastic mucosa. Histochemically, it is rich in protein, sulfhydryl groups, tryptophan, and carbohydrate.
