Abstract

This brief review paper is concerned with the phenomenon of retracted confession statements from legal, psychological and psychiatric viewpoints. The importance of distinguishing between three psychologically different types of ‘false confession’ is emphasized. The paper provides the clinician with a conceptual framework and ways of assessing alleged false confession cases.
