Abstract
Nine different preparations sold as abortifacients have been collected, by obtaining them from hospital in-patients who had used them in attempts to procure abortions, from others who purchased them from various sources, and from hospital staff, who through acquaintances provided information about the sale of abortifacients as well as unused remains of abortifacient preparations. Chemical analysis of tablets was made when there was doubt about their precise composition. The possible medical hazards of using these preparations are outlined. Their use continues despite the availability of legal abortions.
