Abstract

Chronic arsenic poisoning may result from the abuse of arsenic containing tonics. The patient is not aware that the tonic and his state of health are connected and as a result increases the dose of the tonic hoping for a remission of symptoms. This results in a worsening of the condition and admission to hospital. The arsenic levels in hair from such cases are much higher than normal and similar to those found in chronic arsenic poisoning from other sources. The symptoms are relatively mild and appear at arsenic levels significantly greater than those found in acute non-fatal poisoning where severe symptoms are reported. This gives support to the development of arsenic tolerance following long-term ingestion of small amounts.
