Abstract
A psychiatric hospital's semi-secure ward was studied closely for 90 weeks to discover how violence arose. It was found that administrative changes made during the study were associated with dramatic rises and falls in the frequency of violence. The patients seemed to respond favourably to an atmosphere of psychological security, this being particularly evident with those suffering from chronic schizophrenia.
