Abstract
A method is described for the resolution of barbiturate mixtures by preliminary oxidation with an acid solution of potassium permanganate. Barbiturates with saturated side chains are unaffected by this oxidative treatment and can be extracted from the acid solution by benzene. Those with unsaturated side groups are oxidised and their products are insoluble in benzene but soluble in n-butanol. The mixed products can be resolved, and also separated from unattacked barbiturates, by paper chromatography in n-butanol saturated with 6N ammonia. Suggestions are made as to the possible use of this method in the resolution of mixtures of barbiturates of unknown composition.
