Abstract
An examination of official documents and press material indicates that several concepts and elements that have played a prominent role in Finnish security policy during the Cold War period are still present in the new security policy that has been evolving in Finland during the early 1990s. These `ties that bind to the recent past' are here described as falling into the following categories: (1) neutrality policy, (2) Nordic identity, (3) policy towards Russia, and (4) nuclear policy and disarmament policy.
