Abstract
A theoretical study of striking tools shows that the efficiency of the tool depends upon both the location of its center of gravity and the magnitude of its radius of gyration. Methods for evaluating desirable properties of striking tools are discussed. Energy losses arising from the use of the tool, as related to the mechanical properties of the tool, are also discussed in terms of efficiency. Criteria for the design of efficient tools follow from the analyses and discussions.
