Abstract
Tourism is one of the four major components of the economic base of Galveston, Texas, aided by a rich historical legacy and a strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico. Its economic contributions extend to employment, income from all sources, and taxes. The magnitude of tourism extends to thousands of employees and millions of dollars. Despite the lack of growth trend in the number of tourist visitors, Galveston's public and private sectors are committed to expanding and upgrading tourist attractions. The energy crisis and the proximity to major population centers are viewed as catalysts in strengthening the role of tourism. Research methodologies are presented to assist others in determining the impact of tourism in their respective communities.
