Abstract
Hammering nails into timber is amongst the oldest techniques, but understanding the accompanying mechanics is difficult. We here suggest simple models that explain the penetration of a nail into a small hole or narrow crack. The fixing of nails into cracks is also now common in mountaineering both to aid safety and to facilitate climbing.
