Abstract
This research surveys and compares the opinions of specialists, residents, and government officials on the feasibility of implementing compact forms in the development of Dubai neighborhoods. Results reveal that while experts and policy makers appreciate the virtues of density, Dubai’s citizens perceive density as a threat to their economic and social statuses. While density constitutes a morphological ideal for generating better urban landscapes, findings reveal that it is insufficient to adopt this intellectual stance without taking into account cultural nuances. Approaching the city with a careful understanding of context and challenges to implementation holds better promise for encouraging sustainable local urbanism.
