Abstract
The paper, based on research undertaken during a recent Enquiry by Scottish Enterprise and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, examines the issue of commercial application of academic research. It considers the issue from both an academic perspective and an industrial perspective, and also discusses the nature of the processes by which research is commercialized, and some of the barriers to effective and efficient commercialization. While the discussion focuses to an extent specifically on the Scottish context, many of the points which emerge have significance in the wider UK context and internationally.
