Abstract
Equivalent Sphere Illuminance (ESI) is defined and the quantities underlying it discussed. Its advantages and limitations are considered from theoretical and practical viewpoints. It is concluded that in many practical situations the use of ESI can be misleading. An alternative approach to design criteria which fulfills the same purpose as ESI without its disadvantages, is to specify task illuminance and contrast rendering factor separately.
