Abstract
The limit of detection of an ion-selective electrode is usually described in the literature in a far less rigorous way than is practised for other techniques of chemical analysis. There is no need for this discrepancy either theoretically or practically, since electrodes are used for the analysis of highly pure waters at concentrations below those implied by the conventional 'limit'and their sensitivities at extreme dilution can in many cases be predicted theoretically from the known chemistry of the system. Near the limit of detection the emf of an electrode no longer changes in a Nertistian manner, i e, in proportion to log (concentration), and other calibration functions are described. The performance characteristics of commercial ion-selective electrodes are summarised and briefly discussed.
