Abstract
This review article, the first of two, examines background aspects to self-esteem in children in relation to both theoretical issues and measurement problems. The first section examines definitions of both self-concept and selfesteem, Shavelson, Hubner and Stanton's (1976) analysis of self-concept and several research studies. The second section briefly reviews some instruments for measuring global self-esteem and academic self-esteem, ending with a discussion of practical issues arising from assessment procedures.
