The influence of frictional energy on the load-extension behavior of plain woven fabrics

Abstract

Many researches have been performed to present a mathematical model to predict the initial modulus of fabrics. Most of them were performed without taking friction into account whereas, friction phenomenon can play a very important role in the mechanical properties of fabrics. In the present study, the load-extension behavior of plain woven fabrics was investigated with respect to friction. For this purpose, the energy method and Castigliano’s theorem were used to derive the relations. Then a new parameter, frictional energy, was introduced to investigate the effect of friction on the tensile behavior of fabrics. Thereafter, a mathematical model for predicting the initial modulus of fabrics was generated. The result of this model was compared with Leaf’s effort. The results show that the suggested model corresponds to the experimental data more than previous models.
