Abstract

Diffusion of large polymeric molecules into wool fibers is confirmed. Penetration occurs through the nonkeratinous regions, similar to dye diffusion, and indicates that selective modification of the mechanical properties of these regions is possible using this technique. Micrographs of affected sections of treated and untreated wool subjected to Martindale abrasion testing show that treated, cured wool has improved resistance to abrasion.
