Machine-Washable, Flame Retardant Treated Wool—Improvements to the Combined Sirolan and Zirpro Treatments

Abstract

The shrinkproofing polymer Synthappret BAP has a negative effect on fluorozir conate flame retardant treated wool by lowering the level of flame retardation. The incorporation of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) copolymer into the Synthappret reduces the loss in flame retardant finish if the wool is heavier than about 300 g/m2. Though better compatability is achieved when fluorozirconate is applied in the presence of citric acid, the results with intermediate weight (180-190 g/m2) fabrics remain poor. By co-applying tetrabromophthalic acid with the fluorozirconate/citric acid system, a flame retardant finish can be obtained over all fabric weights provided there is at least twice as much PVDC copolymer as Synthappret BAP. Wools so finished are fully machine washable for at least 10 domestic wash cycles.
