A New Method of Estimating the Contribution of Fiber Rupture to Yarn Strength, and its Application

Abstract

A new technique for the assessment of fibers breaking or slipping during failure of a spun yarn on tensile loading is presented. The method uses optical isolation of tracer fibers. When tested at different strain rates, it is observed that, except for very low strain rates, increase in tensile strength with strain rate is a direct contribution of increased strength utilization due to fiber rupture, and that frictional contribution remains essentially constant.
