Abstract
Analysis of the dye transfer mechanism in heat transfer printing reveals the following sequence: sublimation, diffusion in the gas phase, supersaturation, condensation on the fiber surface, and diffusion in the fiber phase. A dye transfer model is presented with a detailed analysis of the “rate-controlling” mechanism and the effects of dwell time, transfer temperature, and pressure. Also, examples are given of the kinetic and thermodynamic analysis required in determining the suitability of dyes for heat transfer printing. This mechanism has certain implications as to the fibers suitable for heat transfer printing, and these are discussed in detail.
