Abstract
Yam data, knitting performance, and fabric properties are examined when using open-end (OE) and ring yarns. A relationship between yarn problems in warp knitting and OE yarn characteristics is given. Results from warp knitting trials show that coarser OE yarns give significant improvements in knitting performance compared to ring yams, and ring yarns with a high twist multiple give better knitting performance than ring yarn with normal knitting twist. Single-knit and double-knit fabric properties of shrinkage, burst strength, abrasion, etc. are examined. Weaker OE yams do result in lower burst strength values, but the values from most knitted fabrics will meet existing standards for performance. An assessment is given on fabric characteristics such as appearance, spirality, and pilling.
