Abstract
A study was made of the use of nonionic and anionic surfactant solutions to desorb hydrophobic and hydrophilic, particulate, carbon-14-labeled carbon from nylon, poly ethylene terephthalate, and cellulose in the form of films and fabrics. The effect of the presence of fatty soil on the removal of particulate carbon was determined. Washing variables were carefully controlled and altered one at a time to learn their effect on the soil removal process. These variables included concentration of the soil on the surface, type and concentration of the surfactant, wash temperature, and addition of bleach. Re sults are discussed in terms of possible mechanisms of soil removal.
