Abstract
The reason for the occurrence of multiple breaks in some materials and not in others is discussed in terms of internal fiber structure. Basic postulates relating multiple breaks to molecular and supramolecular structure are advanced. The degree of, hindered structural mobility in the relaxation processes following an initial break determines whether multiple breaks will occur in a given material. A minimum distortion of the internal structure before failure must occur for hindered mobility to develop. Conclu sions are based on tensile tests conducted on a wide variety of natural and man-made fibers. The effects of chemical, thermal, and mechanical pretreatments are discussed.
