Abstract
Some relations between stress, strain, and time in high mole cular weight organic materials are discussed. In the light of these relations a better interpretation can be given to the conventional stress-strain test than is possible in terms of the mechanical proper ties of metals. The properties of primary creep, secondary creep, swelling and thermo-recovery, and mechanical conditioning which are found in long-chain substances are discussed in detail, together with some results that have been obtained on silk and rayon.
