Part II: Determining the Effective Mean Fiber Length Acting in Each Yarn

Abstract

Yams spun from a particular Egyptian cotton were used to develop a method of ' ° analyzing how fiber properties translate into yarn properties. The yarns in a wide range of sizes and twist factors were spun independently on a ring spinning frame. A method of yarn analysis was developed by evaluating the yam data. Single-strand breaking tenacity was determined for each yarn. Yam tenacity was normalized for fiber fineness, angle of fiber twist, and number of broken fibers. Equations relating yarn twist to the normalized yarn tenacity data for different yarn sizes at a constant twist factor for each of seven twist factors were used to determine unique effective fiber lengths in each yarn. Equations were developed relating yarn twist to effective fiber lengths at constant yam size. Effective fiber lengths for each yarn in the family were compared and agreed with the extant experimental results.
