Abstract
An instrument and computer algorithm is described which measures fabric color variations known as barré. The instrument consists of a phototropic photometer focused on a small spot on a fabric sample which is mounted on a rotating cylinder that moves past the photometer. The analog output is digitized and processed by a computer. The logarithm of the average relative peak-to-peak re flectivity of a series of fabrics of two different colors and two barré widths correlated with the logarithm of the subjective visual grading of the fabrics using the HATRA standard. The coefficient of deter mination for the raw data was 0.78. Replicate runs had good reproducibilities. Blocked photo metric HATRA grade data from the two colors and two barré width fabrics gave a good one-to-one comparison to blocked, visually-determined HATRA grade data.
