Textiles' Properties in the Infrared Irradiation

Abstract

When textiles are placed in the sunlight or infrared irradiation, they will undoubtedly absorb the energy and, thus, their temperature will increase. Behavior of the infrared or the sunlight in the textiles was analyzed in this paper. Transmission of the infrared in the textile decreased according to Lambert-Beer's law. Theoretical analyzed results showed that the textile temperature decreased according to Lambert-Beer's law from the front surface to the backside when the textile was placed in the infrared irradiation. A special index (β) was defined to express the textile's ability of infrared absorbing and temperature increasing properties. The results of some normal textiles tested showed that there were some differences in the infrared absorbing ability among different textiles. Textiles of silk could absorb the irradiation energy more effectively than textiles of cotton and wool. Polyester textiles absorbed less infrared irradiation energy than the aforenamed textiles. However, some ceramic coated textiles showed especially high absorbing efficiency in the infrared irradiation.
