Abstract
A pilot-scale corona reactor was adapted to process cotton sliver. Corona treatment improved cotton spinnability and increased yarn and fabric strength and abrasion resistance. Treatment effectiveness was greatest at 93-96°C with the injection of dilute chlorine gas into the corona cell. Dyeability was unaltered, cotton wax was not removed or oxidized, and fiber hand was unaffected by air corona treatments. Slight harshening occured in air-chlorine corona treatments, but this can be overcome by a softener.
