Abstract
Measurements have been made of the lifetime under dead load and the tenacity of single fibers of five types of cellulosic varns. These yarns included a regular rayon, a rayon tire yarn, a high wet modulus rayon, a rayon produced by saponification of cellu lose acetate fiber, and a regular acetate. The logarithm of lifetime is shown to be a linear function of dead load. The tenacity distributions of four of the five fibers are found to be consistent with a static model based on the statisties of extremes, indicating that tensile fracture results from the presence of flaws. The regular rayon differs from the other four in that its tenacity histogram appears to have two modes.
