Abstract

THP and THPC can be titrated quantitatively by 0.1 N iodine in weakly basic media such as pyridine, aqueous NaHCO3 or aqueous Na2HPO4. Aldehydes do not interfere. Titration in hydrochloric acid solution, as recommended in the literature, is possible only if the THP is aldehyde-free. The stoichiometry of the disproportionation of THP in 6 N HCl to phosphine and THPC has been established by iodine titration. The disproportionation is repressed by acetone.
