Abstract
A radioactive marker has been used to assist in the direct observation of the influence of fiber diameter and length on fiber breakage during recombing on the rectilinear system. The average diameter of the broken fibers was found to be 5.6% lower than that of the originally marked fibers, and fibers longer than a certain "threshold length" suffered significantly more breakage. The majority of portions broken off were in the interval 0.2 to 0.5 cm. Good agreement has been obtained between the percentage fiber breakage, as obtained by observing singly marked fibers and by calculation using the conventional formula.
