Abstract
The problem of fastenings tearing through woven fabrics, whether coated or un coated, arises in most fabric end uses, although it is particularly important in engi neering and industrial applications. A simple theory is developed to explain the main factors influencing the force that is required to tear a fastening through a woven fabric. Two classes of the problem can be distinguished—tearing along warp or weft directions and tearing on the bias. The first case is dealt with here; the second case is covered in Part II.
