Abstract
The general validity of an equation relating cotton trash and respirable dust fractions obtained using gravimetrical measurements made with the cotton particulates analyzer has been tested with data from a variety of other respirable dust separating machines. Six different cottons with a wide range of Shirley trash content were used to test these machines. In the machines where pairs of metallic clothed rolls open the lint to aero dynamically liberate respirable dust, the Shirley trash fraction is proportional to the square of the respirable dust fraction. The Shirley trash is proportional to the respirable dust from the Anderson-Baker dry and Thibodeaux wet methods where the respirable dust is separated from the lint by an air jet and methanol wash, respectively, and for a machine in which the fibers are worked by two perforated, pinned cylinders.
