Abstract
In order to improve cotton spinnability after wet processing, it is necessary to treat the fibers with lubricants. This study reports the influence of four commercial lubricant formulations on cotton sliver cohesion as measured by sliver tenacity. Sliver cohesion passes through two maxima as a function of lubricant concentration in the range of 0 to 1.0%, reflecting two or more competing physical processes. The dependence of roving tenacity (lubricant treated and untreated) on humidity shows a minimum char acteristic of the lubricant used. The lubricant treatment also increases the sensitivity of roving cohesion to temperature.
