Abstract
The amount of Zr (IV) irreversibly taken up by wool fabric from solutions containing various concentrations of acid, sulfate. and neutral salt has been measured at two or more temperatures. The presence of formic acid led to greater uptakes, a maximum of 11.5% ZrO 2 being obtained with small wool samples. The data indicate little cross-linking of polypeptide chains by the Zr. The effects of impregnation with 1. 3, and 5% ZrO2 on various properties of the fabric were recorded. The extension at break showed considerable improvement, but other properties examined were affected to a minor extent.
