Preparing Early Childhood Special Educators for Urban Settings

Abstract

The need for professionals in the field of early intervention continues to increase as states implement PL 99-457. University preparation programs have the challenge and responsibility to design Early Childhood Special Education programs that adequately address the needs of young children and families in their local communities. In this article we discuss some of the critical problems facing young children and families, specifically, AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse, and child abuse. Implications for early invention professionals are presented, and recommendations for areas of inclusion in Early Childhood Special Education preparation programs are provided, particularly for programs training professionals to work in urban settings.
