Polymeric Composites Containing Alumina Trihydrate and Silica

Abstract

Unsaturated polyester resin based on poly [1,2-propylene-maleate-phthalate] was used with styrene monomer (35% by weight) as a binder and alumina trihydrate (ATH) (Al2O3.3H2O) or silica ((SiO2), to produce polymeric composites. The effect of type and concentration of the two fillers on the physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the crosslinked (styrenated) polyester (SP) and its composites have been tested. The fire retardant efficiency of the prepared composites was also investigated. The results indicated that the use of ATH or SiO2 as a filler reduces flammability and enhances electrical characteristics of the composites as compared to the styrenated polyester resin alone.
