The Use of Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastomers in Orthodontics

Abstract

Polyurethane thermoplastic elastomers (PTPE) have found application as materials for orthodontic tensioning and ligation devices. Requirements for ef ficacious tooth movement have led to very specific material property and design selection criteria for these devices. The authors describe the principal PTPE devices now used by the dental profession and present in-progress reports on de velopmental devices undergoing clinical evaluation. Processing considerations of PTPE devices are addressed in view of GMP and other regulatory constraints. Areas for further development are outlined with regard to unmet clinical needs.
