Abstract
This article describes the importance of the nutritional and nurturing effects of breastfeeding for the infant with cleft lip (CL) or cleft palate (CP). Organizations recognize the health benefits of breastfeeding to the mother and infant. Research indicates that use of breast milk decreases childhood disease, reduces infections, and promotes healing, which are especially important for infants with CL or CP. The degree of the defect of the CL and CP influences potential complications associated with feedings and the nutritional status of the infant. The multidisciplinary team should include the infant’s physician, the craniofacial team, dietitian, lactation consultant, and speech and oral pathologist.
