Abstract
This paper examines the transverse effective thermal conductivity of plain weave fabric composites. A three-dimensional thermal resistance network model is proposed. Based upon this model, a closed-form representation of the transverse thermal conductivity has been achieved. The inputs to the analytical solution are constituent material properties, fiber volume fraction, and fabric architectural parameters. No empirical parameters are adopted. The predictability of this model is substantiated by the good agreement between the present results and the published analytical and experimental work. Parametric studies have been conducted to determine the sensitivity of composite effective transverse thermal conductivities to fiber thermal anisotropy, degree of fiber undulation, and fabric weave style.
