Bi-Dimensional Compression Moulding of Super-High Fibre Volume Fraction Composites

Abstract

A bi-dimensional compression moulding apparatus is described whereby a plurality of interfitting anvils, of substantially gee-shaped configuration, is advanced simul taneously in such a way as to create uniform pressure in a plane. With fibre direction perpendicular to this plane, uniaxial fibre reinforced plastics having fibre contents as high as 90% for glass and carbon fibres and higher than 95% for kevlar fibres have been successfully manufactured. Attention is drawn to the potential offered by these new materials for realisation of ultimate mechanical and electrical properties.
