Abstract
A Rayleigh-Ritz analysis is presented to determine the load or strain at which delamination buckling will occur for a composite laminate containing a single delamination. This delamination is assumed to be elliptical in shape, with local axes of symmetry which may be at an angle relative to the global plate axes. The laminate is assumed to be subjected to global loading which transforms to a loading with a relatively small shear component when taken about the local axes of the elliptical delamination. Special cases of this type of loading include uniaxial and biaxial compression. Possible bending-stretching coupling behavior of the delaminated region and the effect of Poisson's ratio mismatch between the delaminated and base region are investigated. Analytical predictions for delamination buckling loads are shown to correlate well with experimental results for a number of different geometries.
